The couple married at the Swan Hotel in Wells, Somerset. HELLO! reports that their civil ceremony was witnessed by around 30 friends and relatives, with photographs showing the newlyweds kissing outdoors as snow fell.
There is also an attributed confirmation behind the venue details. According to GoodtoKnow’s account of contemporary newspaper coverage, a hotel spokesperson said a registrar conducted the ceremony in the hotel’s garden room.
That distinction matters. The wedding is supported by published photographs and attributed reporting. It does not need an invented description of the couple’s feelings, their private vows or conversations among the guests.
Children Changed the Practicalities
Dodkin and Marshall have a son, Thomas, and a daughter, Elsie. Their family arrangements became particularly relevant while Marshall was working in Guadeloupe, where Death in Paradise is filmed.
In an interview originally published in the 11–17 February 2017 issue of Radio Times, Marshall explained that Thomas had travelled with the family during earlier filming periods. That arrangement became harder as his son approached school age and the couple also had a young daughter.
His account provides a concrete connection between Dodkin and a major career decision. Marshall said he and his wife had discussed the limits of the overseas arrangement years beforehand. They had anticipated that it would eventually become impractical.
Why Marshall Left Death in Paradise
Marshall’s departure in 2017 was linked to those family pressures. Press Association reporting described a young daughter and a son about to begin school as central reasons for his decision to leave the Caribbean-based production.
It would be misleading to turn that explanation into a claim that Dodkin demanded he quit. His Radio Times interview describes a discussion between partners about work, travel and their children’s needs. It does not describe an ultimatum.
Marshall later returned to the character of Humphrey Goodman in Beyond Paradise, which launched in 2023. His departure from the original series was therefore one stage in his career, rather than the end of his association with the role.
