Premier League: History, Power Shifts and the Next Big Season

The Premier League began in 1992 with 22 clubs. Today, it is a 20-team competition and one of the most influential football leagues in the world. But its history shows that power in English football is never permanently fixed.

How the Premier League Began

The story of the Premier League does not begin with a famous goal or a historic final. It begins with a decision that changed English football.

On 17 July 1991, the clubs of the old First Division signed an agreement that paved the way for a new league. On 20 February 1992, the 22 First Division clubs formally resigned from the Football League. The Premier League was subsequently established as a separate company.

The first Premier League season began on 15 August 1992. Twenty-two clubs competed in that opening campaign, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The structure eventually changed. The league was reduced to 20 clubs after the 1994/95 season, when four teams were relegated and only two were promoted.

That 20-team format has remained the foundation of the competition.

The Six Clubs That Never Left

One detail stands out when examining the Premier League’s history.

Only six clubs have appeared in every Premier League season since its creation: Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Their continued presence does not mean they have dominated every season. In fact, the balance of power has shifted dramatically.

Manchester United remain the record holders with 13 Premier League titles. Manchester City have eight, while Arsenal have now collected four.

The numbers tell a larger story. The clubs that helped establish the Premier League are still there, but the identity of the dominant teams has changed.

Arsenal End a 22-Year Wait

The latest major shift came at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Arsenal were crowned Premier League champions, ending a 22-year wait for another league title. Their championship was confirmed after Manchester City were held to a draw by AFC Bournemouth.

Arsenal eventually finished the campaign with 85 points, seven ahead of Manchester City.

For Arsenal, the significance was obvious. Their previous Premier League championship had come in 2003/04, when Arsène Wenger’s side completed an unbeaten league campaign.

The latest title therefore closed one of the longest gaps between championships for a major English club.

The Next Question: Who Controls the League?

The 2026/27 season has already introduced another change in momentum.

After the opening five matches, Manchester City sat at the top of the official Premier League table with 15 points. Arsenal had 12 points, while Brighton & Hove Albion had 10.

Manchester City had opened the campaign with five victories from five matches.

That start immediately created another question. Could City turn an early advantage into another championship?

It is too early to answer.

A five-match lead can disappear quickly in a competition involving 380 fixtures. Any claim that the title race is already settled would be speculation rather than analysis.

Arsenal Face an Early Test

Arsenal’s start provided another reminder of how quickly the Premier League can change.

After beginning the season strongly, Arsenal suffered a 3–0 defeat away to Brighton on the fifth matchday.

The result did not end their title challenge. It simply demonstrated how little margin for error exists at the top of the Premier League.

Manchester City, Arsenal and the other leading clubs still have months of football ahead of them.

Three New Clubs Enter the Competition

The changes are not limited to the title race.

For the 2026/27 season, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City were confirmed as promoted clubs. Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United, meanwhile, left the Premier League after relegation.

That cycle is one of the competition’s defining characteristics.

A club can move from the Championship to the Premier League within a single season. An established Premier League name can also fall through the division in the opposite direction.

That uncertainty is part of what makes the competition so difficult to predict.

What Happens Next?

The 2026/27 Premier League season began on 21 August 2026 and is scheduled to conclude on 30 May 2027. The campaign consists of 380 matches.

The league resumes on 10 October following the international break. Arsenal are scheduled to face Leeds United as the competition returns.

Whether Manchester City can maintain their early advantage, whether Arsenal can recover, or whether another club can enter the title race cannot yet be established with certainty.

What can be established is simpler.

The Premier League has changed repeatedly since its creation in 1992. Clubs have risen, fallen, rebuilt and returned. Dominant eras have ended, new ones have emerged, and even the strongest teams have eventually faced a challenge.

The latest chapter is still being written.

And if the history of the Premier League has shown anything, it is that early control is never the same as final victory.
